Business Central 2023 wave 2 (BC23): Provide queries for users to do ad hoc data analysis across tables

Dynamics 365 Business Central

Hi, Readers.
Dynamics 365 Business Central 2023 wave 2 (BC23) is generally available last week. More details: General availability: Dynamics 365 Business Central 2023 release wave 2 (BC23)
And all the sessions of Business Central Launch Event (2023 release wave 2) are available now!

I will continue to test and share some new features that I hope will be helpful.

Provide queries for users to do ad hoc data analysis across tables:

Business value:
Developers can now provide queries that end users and data analysts can use to analyze data directly in the client without the need to open the page in Excel or run a report.

Analysis mode was introduced as a public preview feature in 2023 release wave 1 as a new way of interacting with data on list pages. Instead of running reports using different options and filters, users can simply add multiple tabs that represent different tasks or views on the data. For more information about the analysis mode on list pages, visit Analyze, group, and pivot data on list pages using multiple tabs (In-client Analysis mode) and Analyze list data using data analysis mode.

In this release, Microsoft take this concept even further and make it possible to also analyze data from any query, the same way as you can on a list page.
For example, Query: Items By Location (2554)

When query is opened, it will be displayed in Analysis mode by default.

With this feature, developers can make queries more easily available to client users who need to do ad hoc data analysis. We can add the query as an action on pages using the RunObject property. For example,

By setting the UsageCategory property, we can make queries discoverable to users in Tell Me search and under Reports & Analysis of the role explorer. (As of now 2023.10.11, Query cannot be searched in Tell Me.)

Update:

For usability, we can provide teaching tips by setting the AboutTitle and AboutText properties.

Great. Give it a try!!!😁

PS:
1. In-app contextual help improvements (AboutTitle Property and AboutText Property)

2. Business Central 2022 wave 1 (BC20) new features: Support for rich text in teaching tips and tours (Bold, Italics and HyperLink…)

3. QueryCategory property – Smartlist? (Execute Queries from Pages)

END

Hope this will help.

Thanks for reading.
