Dynamics 365 Business Central: How to specify column width when using Excel Buffer to export data to Excel

Dynamics 365 Business Central

Hi, Readers.
About two years ago, we discussed how to use Excel Buffer to Export data in Business Central. This is a customization that can easily export any data in Business Central to Excel.

BC also prepares a very powerful Open in Excel feature for us. With pages that display a list of records in rows and columns, like a list of customers, sale orders, or invoices, we can export the list to Microsoft Excel, and view it there.

With this action, Excel respects any filters on the page that limit the records shown. The Excel workbook will contain the same rows and columns that appear on the page in Business Central. So this method is not as flexible as the customization with Excel Buffer.

I recently received a question about whether it is possible to specify the width of a column during export. So today I would like to talk about how to specify column width when using Excel Buffer to export data to Excel in AL.

In fact this is not very difficult. The following procedure is available in table 370 “Excel Buffer”.

Let’s see how to use it.

The following is the example I gave in How to use Excel Buffer to Export data to export some data of Customer Ledger Entries.

It can be seen that the Posting Date (B), Customer Name (F), and Description (G) columns are all very short by default, and the user may want to expand them.

We just need to add the following codes.

Then column widths will be changed.
