The End of Release Plans: Dynamics 365 & Power Platform Roadmaps Move to AI at Work roadmap (Moving from release waves to always-on disclosure)

Business Central online is a service that consists of a Microsoft-maintained platform and business functionality. There are two major update cycles per year, with major releases every April and October. Major updates introduce new features, enhancements, and platform improvements. The same applies to other Dynamics 365 products and Power Platform. Furthermore, with each major update, Microsoft releases updated Release Plans every six months.

Microsoft release plans are official documentation and tracking tools that outline upcoming features, enhancements, and timelines for products like Dynamics 365 and the Power Platform.

However, all of this is changing: Release Plans are retiring, and notices have already been posted across the relevant pages.

New Dynamics 365, Power Platform, and Dataverse capabilities will be published to the AI at Work roadmap beginning in September 2026. Microsoft has officially announced a major change in how business application roadmap updates are communicated. Starting in September 2026, Dynamics 365, Microsoft Power Platform, and Microsoft Dataverse roadmap information will join the AI at Work Roadmap, replacing the traditional twice-yearly Release Wave model.

Key Highlights:

Single Entry Point: Dynamics 365, Power Platform, Dataverse, Microsoft 365, Copilot, and other AI-related capabilities will be brought together in a single roadmap experience: aka.ms/AIatWorkroadmap.
Release Waves Are Coming to an End: Microsoft is retiring the traditional Release Wave 1 / Release Wave 2 roadmap model. Instead, new capabilities will be disclosed continuously as plans are committed and ready to be shared, rather than waiting for a twice-yearly release plan.
End-to-End Status Tracking: Roadmap items will be continuously updated as they progress through key lifecycle stages: In Development → Rolling Out → Launched.
Transition Schedule:
- Sept 2026: New Dynamics 365, Power Platform, and Dataverse capabilities begin appearing in the AI at Work roadmap (No September 2026 Release Wave 2 plan will be released).
- Sept–Nov 2026: Existing roadmap items with a Public Preview or General Availability date of June 1, 2026 or later will gradually transition to the new roadmap.
- Nov 15, 2026: Release Planner will officially retire.
Developer & AI Tooling: Microsoft is introducing the Release Communications MCP Server, providing programmatic access to roadmap information. This enables teams to pull roadmap data directly into custom AI workflows, planning tools, and MCP-compatible clients for monitoring and analyzing product updates.
