Hi, Readers.
Today I would like to discuss a question that was recently asked, does Dynamics 365 Business Central support browser-based translation (e.g., Microsoft Translator in Edge browser)?
To maximize productivity, Dynamics 365 Business Central supports many languages. It’s important to know that language support requires translation of platform captions and application captions (UI). Translated platform captions are provided by Microsoft for most of the available languages. Application languages are provided by both Microsoft and partners, depending on the language.

Application languages delivered by Microsoft are provided as language apps that can be installed as needed. These language apps are available on Marketplace.

Partners can also provide application translation for any platform supported language and for those languages that Microsoft doesn’t support. To use one of those languages, contact the app publisher through Marketplace.

So, when we need to switch languages, we either install the language packs available on the Marketplace or translate them ourselves. More details: XLIFF translation files (Working with Translations)
Recently I was asked: Can we skip language packs and just use browser-based translation? Does Business Central support this?
Let’s take Microsoft Translator in Microsoft Edge as an example. Microsoft Translator in Microsoft Edge offers webpage translation, automatic language detection, and seamless multilingual browsing for global web access. You can translate pages instantly, manage preferred languages, and enable auto-translate settings to improve productivity and accessibility.

Open a webpage in Microsoft Edge. The browser will detect the language of the page, and a menu will appear asking you to confirm that you want to translate the page.

Or just click … -> Translate

In the Translate to dropdown, choose the language you want the page translated into. The default is the language you’ve set for Microsoft Edge.

To translate the page, select Translate.

To always automatically translate from the source language, choose More -> Always translate from [Language] check box.

Inside the address bar, you’ll briefly see the status showing that the page has been translated.

If you select the translate icon in the address bar, the menu that appears also shows the status. Select Show original will revert translated webpage back to original language.

That was a brief introduction to browser translation features; so, does Business Central support this? Let’s run a quick test.

Done.

We can see that the set language is English, but all the content has been automatically translated.

Test video:
However, these are all literal translations, and they also translated content that shouldn’t be translated, such as the value of the Vendor Name.

Here are three reasons why browser-based translation is generally not recommended for Business Central:
- Lack of Contextual Accuracy for ERP Terminology: Browser translators rely on general-purpose machine translation and often mistranslate domain-specific ERP terms (such as “Posting,” “Item Ledger Entries,” or “Dimensions”), which can lead to critical user misunderstandings or data entry errors.
- UI Layout and Performance Disruption: Real-time DOM manipulation by browser extensions can break complex UI elements, freeze responsive grids, and cause significant performance lags during intensive data entry tasks.
- Inconsistent Multi-User Experience and Supportability: Because translation happens entirely on the client side per browser, different users might see completely different UI texts, making standard troubleshooting, documentation references, and technical support much harder to manage.
If you are interested, you can give it a try.😑

Hope this will help.
