Hi, Readers.
Dynamics 365 Business Central 2026 wave 1 (BC28.4) is generally available. More details: Cumulative Update Summary for Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central (August, 2026)
I will continue to test and share some new features that I hope will be helpful. In this post, I would like to talk about Upload, install, and manage PTEs in the admin center.
Upload, install, and manage PTEs in the admin center:
Business value
This feature gives administrators full lifecycle control over per-tenant extensions directly from the Business Central admin center and its APIs. It simplifies deployment workflows, enables reliable automation, and reduces operational overhead. Partners and customers can integrate extension management into CI/CD pipelines, improving governance, predictability, and release velocity.
Up to now, you upload and schedule installation of a PTE by using the Extension Management page in an environment.

On the Extension Management page, go to Manage, and then choose Upload Extension. On the Upload and Deploy Extension page, specify the .app file to upload. To proceed, choose the Accept button, and then the Deploy action to start deploying the PTE.

However, with the release of the new feature mentioned above, Microsoft has advised that the original functionality will be deprecated, per an announcement on BC Viva Engage. (I have highlighted two points that require attention)
This week, we’re rolling out a change to the Business Central Admin Center and its API that introduces full PTE management. With this update, administrators can upload new PTEs, schedule their installation or update, and manage these operations directly through the Admin Center.
You can review the functional documentation here.
To support these capabilities, the Admin Center API has been updated to version 2.29. Documentation for the new PTE Management endpoints is available here.
With this change, we’re also announcing the upcoming deprecation of PTE management through the Extension Management page in Business Central environments. For more information, see deprecated features in the platform.
As you transition your deployment workflows to PTE Management in the Admin Center, be aware that the Admin Center and Extension Management experiences aren’t fully interoperable. Scheduled PTE installations and updates are only visible in the experience where they were created, either the Admin Center or Extension Management. Once the installation or update completes successfully, the installed PTE (version) becomes visible in both experiences.

If you work for a Microsoft partner and still don’t have access to the Viva Engage links above, then submit your application here: aka.ms/BCVivaSignUp.
First, let’s take a look at the new features. This actually serves as a supplement to the two features below.
1. Business Central 2025 wave 1 (BC26): Managing PTE/DEV Apps in admin center
2. Dynamics 365 Business Central: Uninstall apps from Admin Center
Open the Business Central administration center and select the environment from which you want to manage the apps. More details: Granular administration as Dynamics 365 Business Central Administrator (New BC admin role in Microsoft 365 admin center)

Choose Apps.

And then, you’ll see a new button: Install Extension.

For example, Immediate

Extension installation is in progress. Check the Operations page for updates.

In Extension Management:

Let me test the deployment to the Next major update as well.

Extension installation has been scheduled and will run according to the selected deployment schedule. Check the Operations page for updates.

In Extension Management: As Microsoft mentioned, the data on these two sides is not synchronized.

Failed: The application extension with app id ‘1b3f7e9e-9d10-4ced-975b-f57eb5e19bd1’ cannot be staged for future deployment because there is no existing deployed version to upgrade from.

Next, let’s move on to the second change: Remove ability to upload and install PTEs from Extension Management page (replacement) – Changes in 2027 release wave 1 (version 30.0)

Uploading and installing per-tenant extensions (PTEs) from the Extension Management page inside a Business Central environment by using the Extension Management page or Automation API is being phased out. As of the 2026 release wave 1, administrators of SaaS environments should use the Business Central Admin Center or the Admin Center API to upload, install, schedule, and uninstall PTEs. The Extension Management page remains available for viewing installed extensions. It’s expected to be removed as an upload surface in 2027 release wave 1. Plan to move tenant deployment workflows and any automation that depends on this page to the Admin Center or its API. Administrators of OnPrem environments should use the Microsoft.Dynamics.Nav.Apps.Management Module to administer PTEs.
This is also a major change. As of the April 2027 release—2027 release wave 1 (version 30.0)—both methods are currently supported. However, after that point, management will be restricted exclusively to the Admin Center, which partners should keep in mind.
That said, as of now, Microsoft has not provided a new role to log into the Admin Center, such as a ‘Business Central App Manager’. More details: Granular administration as Dynamics 365 Business Central Administrator (New BC admin role in Microsoft 365 admin center)
Additionally, the procedure for installing AppSource/Marketplace apps remains unconfirmed. I will share updates as soon as more information becomes available.
