Business Central 2026 release wave 1 (BC28.2): Change AI models for agents in the UI

I will continue to test and share some new features that I hope will be helpful. In this post, I would like to talk about Change AI models for agents (preview).
Change AI models for agents (preview)

Agents in Business Central can run on different AI models. The model an agent uses can affect its behavior, performance, and results. Multiple models can be available at the same time, and each agent can either use a specific model or rely on the automatic (default) model selection.

An AI model is the engine inside an artificial intelligence system that learns from data to perform tasks. For example, in VS Code, we can easily switch between the AI models you need.

Starting with Business Central 2025 wave 2 (BC27.4), we can now create and design Custom Agents. More details: Envision and design AI agents in Business Central (Custom Agent)

And with this minor update (BC28.2), we can now view and manage AI models directly within the UI. Let’s see more details.

In Business Central, go to the Agents page.

Select the agent you want to configure. (If you don’t have one, please create one first)

On the agent card, find the Agent model section.

In the Model field, select a model from the list, or choose Auto to let the system select the default model.

Done.

If you select Auto, the agent uses whatever model Microsoft designates as the current default. This means the model can change over time without manual intervention. If you need predictable behavior, pin your agent to a specific model version.

When an agent runs a task, Business Central resolves which model to use in the following order:

If a model is specified on the task, that model is used.
If no model is set on the task but a model is specified on the agent, the agent-level model is used.
If no model is set on either the task or the agent, the default model is used.
