With 2024 release wave 1, we introduced chat with Copilot: a conversational experience where people can get assistance from Microsoft Copilot to find data, get unblocked, or learn new skills. Most of our customers install one or more ISV add-on apps from Microsoft AppSource to enhance Business Central with industry-specific solutions, localized functionality, or other critical capabilities that meet their needs. Now, Copilot in Business Central can explain and guide workers through using functionality of these add-on apps, transforming Copilot from a simple “librarian” to an in-house expert that understands your unique Business Central.
Microsoft Copilot is an AI-powered assistant that helps spark creativity, boost productivity, and eliminate tedious tasks. By chatting with Copilot in Business Central, you can ask questions and find business data using natural language. Here’s what you can do:
- Find business data for your company in Business Central. Use chat to look up and open data about entities or records related to business processes, such as customers, vendors, sales orders, and items. For example, ask: “Show me the latest sales order for Adatum”.Copilot can also organize data for you. Just ask it to group records or do calculations like adding or averaging, and it generates an analysis tab, displaying the results.
- Get explanations or step-by-step guidance on various tasks. For example, ask: “Help me understand dimensions” or “How do I post a sales order”. Learn more about prompting in Prompting for aggregating data on analysis tabs.
- Know the purpose and use of each field. When you choose Ask Copilot in a tooltip for a field, chat opens with an Explain prompt for the field name and Copilot provides information about it. Copilot links to the articles it referenced, so it’s easy to verify the description.

With this minor update, Copilot’s chat capabilities have been enhanced with the following:
1. To enhance Copilot with information from the web, administrators must first Enable Bing Search from the Copilot & agent capabilities page.
By enabling Bing Search, you agree to data being processed by the Bing Search Service outside of your environment’s geographic region or compliance boundary.

2. Users can ask questions about content from installed add-on apps, such as new pages, fields, and business processes.


3. Copilot explains and guides based on online documentation provided by the apps installed in your Business Central environment.

4. The Ask Copilot icon is available in tooltips for custom fields that originate from installed apps.

PS: If you add Help Links, the Ask Copilot button will not appear. More details: Dynamics 365 Business Central: Adding Help Links

5. These enhancements are currently available in sandbox environments only.

2. Improve Copilot and agent output for your extensions: In most cases, Copilot and agents use generative AI to view, learn, and use Business Central like any user. These tasks rely on the quality of the text displayed in Business Central captions, notifications, and messages, and the quality of your online documentation to explain new concepts and business processes introduced in your Business Central extensions.
Here are some practical examples to improve the quality of Copilot output:
- Ensure your captions, tooltips, and teaching tips are concise, informative, and unambiguous. Explain critical nuances such as any special meaning of a default value or the purpose of a page.Learn more in Add tooltips to table and page fields and Teaching tips and in-app tours for onboarding users.
- Define alternate keywords for your pages and reports that represent common or industry-specific terms.Learn more in AdditionalSearchTerms.
- Use role-tailoring and other standard Business Central mechanisms to reduce unnecessary page content.Learn more in Customize the user interface for user roles.
- Define an appropriate brick field group for your tables to ensure records are represented in a compact form.Learn more in Display lists as tiles using brick field group.
- Apply access control using permissions so users, Copilot, and agents have a smaller data landscape to work with and only the minimum necessary to carry out their tasks.Learn more in Entitlements and permission sets overview.
3. While in preview, Copilot can’t provide guidance or answer questions based on documentation for your extensions. This functionality is coming in a later release update. More details: Influence Copilot and agents without extending them
