Business Central 2025 wave 1 (BC26): Mark a user-defined layout as obsolete on the Report Layouts page

Dynamics 365 Business Central

Hi, Readers.
Dynamics 365 Business Central 2025 wave 1 (BC26) is generally available. More details: General Available: Dynamics 365 Business Central 2025 release wave 1 (BC26).

I will continue to test and share some new features that I hope will be helpful. In this post, I would like to talk about how to mark a user-defined layout as obsolete in Business Central.

Business Central includes many built-in layouts that you can use on your reports. Other layouts might be added as part of extensions. In addition, you can create your own report layouts, either from scratch or based on an existing layout. More details: Business Central 2022 wave 1 (BC20): New pages for report layout administration (page 9660 “Report Layouts”)

A layout can become obsolete for various reasons. For example, the data model might change, making the layout outdated, or a more efficient layout might be introduced, making the current layout redundant. With this wave (BC26), you can mark a user-defined layout as obsolete if needed on the Report Layouts page. Let’s see more details.

Select the Tell Me feature icon, enter Report Layouts, and then choose the related link.

The Report Layouts page appears and lists all the layouts currently available for all reports.

Select the layout that you want to change, and then select the Edit Info action.

Turn on the Mark layout as obsolete toggle.

Mark layout as obsolete
Specifies whether the layout is obsolete.

PS: In BC25.5 and previous versions

Select OK and the layout will be marked as obsolete.

Marking a layout as obsolete signals to others that it will likely be removed in a later release, so they should use an alternative layout. Give it a try!!!😁

PS:
It is not possible to modify the layout info for this layout because it is provided by an extension. So you can only mark a user-defined layout as obsolete.

Extension layouts are marked as obsolete in AL code using the ObsoleteState property and can’t be changed using the Edit Info action. More details: Business Central 2025 wave 1 (BC26): Use new properties on a report layout (ObsoleteState and ExcelLayoutMultipleDataSheets)

END

Hope this will help.

Thanks for reading.
