Business Central 2025 wave 1 (BC26): New permission set (Copilot System Features) – grant or deny Copilot permissions for individual users

Dynamics 365 Business Central

Hi, Readers.
Dynamics 365 Business Central 2025 wave 1 (BC26) is generally available. More details: General Available: Dynamics 365 Business Central 2025 release wave 1 (BC26).

I will continue to test and share some new features that I hope will be helpful. In this blog post, I would like to briefly share a permissions update for the Copilot feature.

Copilot is the AI-powered assistant that helps spark creativity, boost productivity, and eliminate tedious tasks. Copilot in Business Central is the world’s first AI-powered assistant across all lines of business. With Copilot in Business Central, small and medium-sized organizations empower their workers through intuitive AI tools that boost creativity and save time. More details: Copilot in Business Central overview.

Copilot & agent capabilities page lists all available Copilot and AI-related features and their status (Active or Inactive). The features are divided into two sections: preview and generally available.

  • To turn on a feature, select it in the list, and then select Activate.
  • To turn off a feature, select it in the list, and then select Deactivate.

As of BC25.5, for some Copilot features, such as Chat with Copilot, we cannot set permissions for individual users, below is a screenshot I took from MS Learn (it has now been updated)

Can admins grant or deny permission to individual users to get access to chat?
No, there’s no permission or permission set for chat.

With this wave (BC26), Microsoft finally added a permission set, COPILOT SYS FEATURES (System).

PS: In BC25.5 and previous versions

Contains three system permissions:

TypeIDObject Name
System9680Allow Copilot Summary
System9690Allow Copilot Chat
System9700Allow Copilot Autofill

These permissions can be added to your own permission set, so you can also exclude these permissions.

MS Learn (Docs) has been updated:
Can admins grant or deny permission to individual users to get access to chat?

Let’s look at a simple example, I created a permission set that excluded the Copilot Chat permission.

Assign to a test user.

Users can still see the Chat with Copilot icon, but clicking it will display the following error message.

You’re missing out! You do not have permission to use the Chat feature in this environment.
System administrators can learn about required permissions here.

The following table lists the permissions that are required to use the Copilot features that Business Central provides. More details: Granting user access
