Block items or variants from production output:

Business Central gives you full control over the materials you use in production. You can prevent specific items and item variants from being used as production output. For example, blocking items can be useful if you want to restrict replenishment because you’ve started to produce another model, but want to be able to sell the remaining stock.
In Business Central we have three ways to block an item, we can block an item from being entered on lines in sales or purchase documents, and we can block it from being posted in any transaction. From Business Central 2023 wave 2 (BC23), same as on the Item Card, we can block item variants. More details: Business Central 2023 wave 2 (BC23): Block item variants (Block, Sales Blocked, and Purchasing Blocked)
With this wave (BC26), we can block an item or an item variant from being used for production output. Let’s see more details.
To block an item or variant from production, on the Item Card, Item Variants, and Item Variant Card pages, set the Production Blocked field to Output.
Item Card:
Production Blocked
Specifies which transactions with the item cannot be processed on production documents, except requisition worksheet, planning worksheet and journals.
Item Variants:
Production Blocked
Specifies which transactions with the item variant cannot be processed on production documents, except requisition worksheet, planning worksheet and journals.
Item Variant Card:
When an item or an item variant is production-blocked, it isn’t available for selection on the following pages:
- Production order header (all statuses)
- Production order lines
If you enter it manually, the following error will be displayed:
Additionally, if a production order includes blocked items or item variants, you can’t use the following actions:
- Post output in output journal or production journal
You cannot produce Item 1900-S because the Production Blocked is Output on the Item card.
- Refresh production order
The field Item No. of table Prod. Order Line contains a value (1896-S) that cannot be found in the related table (Item).
- Replan production order
You cannot produce Item 1896-S because the Production Blocked is Output on the Item card.
- Calculate subcontracts in subcontracting worksheet should skip those items.

Note: You can still have lines in the requisition and planning worksheet, but you won’t be able to carry out the action and create the production order. If you production-block an item, consider changing the replenishment method to to exclude the item from planning.
