Business Central 2025 wave 1 (BC26): Reopen/undo finished production orders

Dynamics 365 Business Central

Hi, Readers.
The public preview for Dynamics 365 Business Central 2025 release wave 1 (BC26) is available. Learn more: Link.

I will continue to test and share some new features that I hope will be helpful.

Reopen finished production orders:

Business value:
After you complete a production order and set its status to Finished, you might discover a mistake. For example, you might find that consumption is missing or the item tracking information is incorrect for the goods you produced. You can now reopen the finished order to make adjustments so that your inventory and cost transactions are correct.

In Business Central, a production order can have one of the following statuses:

  • Simulated
  • Planned
  • Firm Planned
  • Released
  • Finished

The status of a production order controls what you can do with it, and the form and content of the production. Production orders display on different pages according to their status.

You can’t change the status of a production order manually. To change the status of an order, use the Change Status action on the production order or use the Change Production Order Status page.

A finished production order is unique, based on the following characteristics:

  • A finished production order is typically one that is manufactured.
  • Finishing the production order is an important task in completing the costing lifecycle of the produced item. After you finish a production order, you can adjust and reconcile costing.
  • Finished production orders are used for reporting and to support the ability to track back to other orders (for example, sales, production, and purchases). The ability to track back to a finished production order allows you to review the detailed history.
  • You can’t change finished production orders.

More details: Finished production order

All along, there is no way to undo a finished production order, if you search online, you will find many discussions about either customization or other methods to adjust the cost or quantity. There is no way to reopen a finished production order, for example, Reverse consumption on Finished Production Order? and Manufacturing – how to undo a finished production order

With this wave (BC26), Microsoft added this feature to the standard.👏👏👏

Let’s see more details. To reopen a production order, follow these steps:

  • On the Finished Production Orders page, select the order you want to edit.
  • Choose the Reopen action.
  • In the Do you want to reopen the production order? confirmation dialog, choose Yes.

If there are no errors, the Finished Production Order will be converted to the Released Production Order.

It’s easy to reopen a finished production order to correct a mistake now. However, to protect your data there are currently a few restrictions:

  • You can reopen finished production orders only one time.

This production order has already been reopened before. This can only be done once.

There is a Reopened field on the Production Order (5405) page to control this.

  • You can reopen finished production orders if they don’t have output, and cost WIP is written off to your inventory adjustment account.

This production order does not have any output. It cannot be Reopened.

Great. Give it a try!!!😁
